The 1963 Lancia Appia Sport Zagato

The Sport Zagato was designed by Ercole Spada, who had just joined Zagato at the time, it was his job to take the design of the Zagato GTE, and adapt it to the shorter chassis of the Appia. Shrinking the dimensions without losing the character and intent of the shape was the challenge he was faced with. Given the continued praise for its looks, he met that challenge successfully. The result is this taut and light coupe, which is a rare find. The diminutive size and weight of roughly 1800 pounds means the 60 hp V4 motor is still capable of a brisk pace.

The 1963 Lancia Appia Sport Zagato now available after nearly 40 years of single ownership is finished in Pale Green color with a black interior, retaining much of its originality. One of 200 made, the original owner of this Appia was the successful television producer, Arthur Vitarelli. He used the car frequently on his commute from his home in Newport Beach, California to the studios throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Today’s owner purchased the car from Mr. Vitarelli 40 years ago, regularly driving the car throughout ownership. This special Lancia shows beautifully, both inside and out, and has an impressively brief list of ownership history for its age, spending most of its life in Southern California. Included in the sale comes a binder with historical documentation for this car.

This Lancia is the perfect addition from a unique style perspective. The car has a charming history from its original use, running to and from Hollywood, and benefitted from being in the arid California climate its entire life. The low owner count and consistent care make this a tantalizing buy, and the lovely proportions would make a great complement to any collection of sports cars.

Exterior

The Lancia Appia’s exterior is a pale green, refinished around 2013, and in very good condition. The body has some waves in it along the bottom side panels, but the paint is mostly blemish free, with a few mild imperfections. The chrome is all original and in good condition, as are the badges and grill. The Appia still sports the California “black plate” license plate assigned to it in the 1960’s, and is registered for road use.

Interior

The interior of this coupe is in fine working condition with nice presentation. The seat leather and the carpets in the front of the passenger compartment were replaced within the last few years, and the carpet in the rear looks a bit sun faded in contrast. But, the rest of the black interior is original, clean and straight with just a bit of wear and patina that looks good. The gauges and switchgear are all present and functional, though the Blaupunkt AM/FM radio is not currently operational.

Drive Train

This Lancia Appia is powered by Lancia’s Series 3 1.1 liter V4 engine, with 60hp, running through a four speed manual transmission with syncromesh in the top three gears. The car is in good running condition with no issues, and powers the light little coupe enthusiastically. The running gear is mostly original, except for the replacement internal fuel tank installed many years ago.
