1966 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series II

By 1966, grand tourers with four seats were a mainstay in the Ferrari lineup, evolving from the manufacturers purely 2 seat sports car offerings of prior decades. The success of the 250 GTE was enough to convince the company that there was a strong market for a four-seater with similar performance to their other models. Customers were happy to have the extra space for passengers or luggage and yet still have the power of a Ferrari behind them. Ferrari introduced the 330 GT 2+2 after ceasing production on their 250 Series. A new model altogether, it came with a plethora of mechanical updates. The 330 featured Koni adjustable shock absorbers, a Dunlop dual-circuit breaking system and a wheelbase increased by 50 millimeters. The most significant change, however, was to the nose which was designed with quad-headlamps. It was said this design element was intended to attract more American buyers.

The second series of the 330 GT 2+2 was introduced midway through 1965 model year. The stunning Pininfarina body design reflected Ferraris desire to make this 330 2+2 a grand tourer for four with sporty execution, building the nose of the Series II to look strikingly similar to that of the 275 GTS. The interior was revised with a transmission tunnel that now connected to the central dashboard. This caused further changes to the dash and the location of the switches and other accessories. The Borrani wheels which appeared on earlier, were replace with ten-hole cast-alloy block knock offs. Only 455 examples of the 330 GT 2+2 Series II were produced with the model being replace in 1967 with the more aggressively styled 365 GT.

Completed in September 1966, chassis 8947 GT was shipped to Luigi Chinetti Motors in New York City. Finished in the stunning Oro Chiaro over Rosso Leather, the car was well optioned with power steering and windows and a five-speed manual transmission. The car was shipped to Ron Tonkin Grand Turismo in Portland, OR. where it was sold to its first owner. A San Francisco engineer purchased the car in 1983 from a gentleman living in Sacramento who eventually parted with 8947 GT in 1989. Sometime that year the car was painted black by the Bradley Hallock Co. before travelling to its next owner in Connecticut. In 1996 the car would be sold to a long-term owner in Maryland who would enjoy it until 2014 when it was sold to its current owner.

Appreciating its history and understanding that this Series II would benefit from being returned back to its original build specification, having lived decades with an incorrect exterior color, Ferrari Classiche in Maranello was given the task of fully restoring chassis 8947 GT. The exterior was painted Oro Chiaro and the interior was restored in the original Rosso leather. Rarely seen together, this color combination is a beautiful look for this Series II The engine and drivetrain were also completely rebuilt, as was the chassis and braking system. Ferrari Classiche took great care in taking this 330 GT 2+2 back to its original configuration.

Featuring a 3,967 cc SOHC V-12 engine with triple weber carburetors, a five-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension, a live rear axle and four-wheel disc brakes, the 330 GT 2+2 Series II has to be one of the most enjoyable Ferrari touring cars to have been produced. This example certainly rings all the right bells and is sure to delight any future owner.

Exterior

The exterior was repainted by Ferrari Classiche in its original Oro Chiaro. The paint is in excellent condition with only a few minor cosmetic blemishes. These minor imperfections can be seen in the photographs of the car on the driver’s door, above the rear bumper on the driver’s side, and on the hood where the two hood latches are secured to the underside.

Interior

Having been recently restored, the interior of the car appears in near pristine condition. The beautiful Rosso Leather is very striking. All the interior appointments appear to be in the same condition with the white headliner, dash wood, gauges and switches all having been cleaned and restored as necessary.

Engine and Drivetrain

The engine bay appears in show ready condition with all the correct finishes in place. The hood pad has been restored and appears in excellent condition.

Trunk and Storage Compartment

The trunk carpet appears as new. The original spare wheel is installed beneath the trunk panel and appears in fine condition.
