1968 BMW 2002 Ti Rally Prepped Race Car
Launched by BMW in 1968, the 2002 was powered by a 1,990cc 100bhp version of BMW’s M10 SOHC four-cylinder engine. American importer, Max Hoffman, had been asking BMW for a sportier version of the 1600-2 series that could be sold in the US. It is said that Helmut Werner Bönsch, BMW’s director of product planning and Alex von Falkenhausen, the designer of the M10 engine, both had installed a two-liter engine installed in their personal 1600-2 models. After realizing that they both had the same idea, they prepared a proposal to BMW’s board to build a two-liter version of the 1600-2. This would become the BMW 2002.
Along with the base model with a single carburetor were the higher performance versions, the dual carburetor high compression 2002Ti and the fuel injected 2002Tii. Designed as a pared down version of the “Neue Klasse” sedan that debuted in 1966, the 2002 was instantly popular. The automatic 2002 became available in 1969.
In 1969, Dieter Quester drove the works turbocharger equipped 2002 to a victory in the 1969 European Touring Car Championship. In rallying, BMW used the naturally aspirated 2002Ti and 2002 Tii versions. While the 2002 was competitive in rallying, the only significant win it would see in its five-year campaign was at the 1972 Portuguese TAP Rally, at the hands of driver Achim Warmbald.
This particular example was purchased by Mr. Schmitt through Mint Classics in 2016. The car was then shipped from Germany to San Francisco, where it has since remained. It currently sports Atlantic Minerölwerk livery, as well as a BMW Club of Columbia windshield sticker. The previous owner participated in various historic rally events in Europe prior to selling the car.
A recent service was performed by North Bay Bavarian and a complete list of the upgrades was made at that time. Some of the most notable of the upgrades this vintage racer has received are A4 ALPINA throttle-body fuel injection, a close-ratio “dogleg” 5-speed transmission, Tii front brake calipers with vented rotors, and E21 rear brakes. Qualified to race at a multitude of historic vintage racing events, this fully prepped 2002 rally car is sure to bring a twinkle to the eye of any vintage racing competitor or BMW racing fan.
Exterior
This 1968 2002 rally prepped race car sports an ALPINA-style wide body kit with Euro-style front and rear bumpers. It is dressed in Atlantic Minerölwerk livery with other sponsors, as well as a windshield sticker from the BMW Club of Columbia. While in excellent condition, the exterior does show some evidence of its recent racing history. The front and rear wheel rims are 13” x 7” and are in excellent condition. All glass except for the windshield has been replaced with Plexiglas.
Interior
The interior has a bolt in roll-cage, Sparco racing steering wheel and Recaro racing seats with harnesses. The floor has been lined with steel and Dynamat heat and sound insulating material. The centrally placed tachometer leaves no doubt that this 2002 cockpit was set up for one thing only, racing!
Engine and Drive Train
Powered by the famed BMW inline 4-cylinder engine, this 2002 has had a host of upgrades to make it a competitive and reliable vintage race car. The upgrades include the following: A4 ALPINA A4 throttle-body fuel injection, C/R “dogleg” 5-speed transmission, 3.25” open differential, C/R steering box, turbo radiator, dual blue ignition coils, engine cooler, ALPINA-style exhaust header, Tii front brake calipers with vented rotors, E21 rear brakes, Tii boxed rear control arms, brake master cylinder mounted at the pedal box, reinforced front frame rails, reinforced front subframe at left motor mount, oil pan crank scraper plate, Lester Owen rocker arms, rally hydraulic rear brake lever, rally springs and sway bars, Bilstein shocks front and rear.
Documentation and Spares
A skid plate, as well as a binder compiled by Mr. Schmitt with receipts and information about the current configuration of the car is included with the sale.
