1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302
One of the finest products of Ford Motor Company’s all-out “Total Performance” motorsports campaign of the 1960s, the Boss 302 Mustang was purpose-built to regain Ford’s dominance in the wildly popular SCCA Trans-Am racing series and homologate its new engine for Trans-Am competition. Worthy of its brash and memorable name, the Boss 302 won the 1970 Trans-Am championship with Parnelli Jones and strong demand prompted production of 7,013 street cars for 1970 including this example.
Documented by a Deluxe Marti Report, this 1970 Boss 302 was ordered for dealer stock, produced on March 19, 1970 and delivered to Kalamazoo, Michigan’s Don Seelye Ford Inc. Factory-installed features in addition to the ‘Code G’ 302-4V Boss engine and mandatory 4-speed close-ratio manual transmission included a 3.50 conventional rear axle, rear deck spoiler, F60x15 belted tires with raised white letters, a “Sport Deck” fold-down rear seat, and AM radio. A highly detailed restoration prior to purchase by the current owner has been elevated with numerous detail enhancements and the vehicle is offered with approximately 57,500 miles, believed correct.
Exterior
Finished in the Medium Blue Metallic with Flat Black hood, stripes, and ‘Boss 302’ graphics, the paint finish appears excellent, complemented by gleaming brightwork. In addition to the factory rear deck spoiler, this Boss is enhanced by a front spoiler and attractive “Sport Slat” rear window louvers. Rolling stock includes a great-looking set of ‘Magnum 500’ five-spoke wheels with chrome rims mounting BF Goodrich Radial T/A white lettered tires for a great finishing touch.
Interior
The interior features optional, factory-specified Black Rhino/Corinthian Vinyl upholstery with bucket seats, matching carpeting, and a desirable center console housing a Hurst shifter with iconic “T” handle. A factory-specified AM radio and “Sport Deck” fold-down rear seat complete the businesslike, yet clean, complete, and inviting interior compartment of this Boss 302. A warning label is affixed to the driver’s side of the upper console and surrounding the driver’s side sun visor is a factory instructional card, as when the car was delivered new to the dealer.
Engine and Drive Train
The matching numbers ‘Code G’ Boss 302 V-8 engine is clean and highly detailed, featuring correct finishes, factory decals, and components throughout, including the proper air-cleaner assembly topped with a chrome lid. A ‘Toploader’ close-ratio 4-speed transmission and 3.50:1 conventional rear axle deliver the power to the road. Consistent with the engine powering this Boss 302, the underhood compartment is clean, correct in presentation, and very well detailed, with proper components, finishes, labels, and accessories in place.
Trunk and Storage Compartment
Consistent with the rest of the car, the trunk compartment of this Boss 302 is correctly finished and equipped, complete with factory-type plaid mats and a correct space-save spare wheel/tire with factory-type plaid cover in place. Correct decals with jacking instructions and space saver spare usage are also affixed to the underside of the trunk lid.
Documentation and Spares
In addition to the aforementioned Deluxe Marti Report documenting original features, options, and data, this Boss 302 also includes an original build sheet. Discovered in nearly perfect condition underneath the carpeting just prior to the car’s acquisition by the current owner, it is laminated for preservation.
