1974 Dino Ferrari 246 GTS

Making its debut at the 1965 Paris Auto Salon on the Pininfarina stand, the Dino Berlinetta Speciale was named in tribute of Enzo Ferrari’s late son, Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari. A mid-engine V6 powered sports car which wore his signature on its badging, Alfredo was credited with co-designing the engine which powered this piece of rolling sculpture along with engineer Vittorio Jano. After its debut in Paris, Ferrari exhibited a production bound prototype with a dual-overhead cam 2.0-liter V6 mounted transversely in front of the rear axle at the Turin Motor Show.

Replacing the original Dino 206 GT in 1969 was the more powerful Dino 246. With an upgraded 2.4-liter V6 engine and a rear mid-engine configuration, it was capable of 195hp and a top speed of 146mph. The mid-engine configuration provided light steering and excellent balance while driving. A US Model was introduced at the end of 1971 which is identified by the flush mounted indicator lights cut into the front and rear wings. The 246 GTS model was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in the Spring of 1972 with a black finished removable roof panel. It can also be identified by the omitted rear quarter windows which were replaced by plain metal sail panels with three cabin exhaust air holes. Over 3,700 246s were produced in the GT Berlinetta and GTS spider configurations, a testament to the model’s popularity.

This particular Dino 246 GTS, completed on July 26, 1974, was beautifully finished in Rosso Rubino metallic paint over black leather and was built with the highly coveted “Chairs and Flares” option. The “Chairs and Flares” option denotes seats that are upholstered in the Ferrari “Daytona” style finish, a wider wheel and tire combination from factory and flared wheel arches to accommodate the wider rear track.

Imported into the US by Chinetti-Garthwaite Imports, Inc., this Ferrari Dino was purchased through Knaus Continental Autos in Lake Forest, Illinois and registered on June 6th, 1975 to its first owner in Winnetka, IL. After 12 years of ownership, this Dino was sold in 1987 to its second owner of Oak Brook, IL who quickly sold the car within the same year to a Florida collector. The third owner of this 246 Dino would move the car with him from Florida to California. Subsequent owners and collectors of this Dino would keep the car in California through the early 2000’s until the car was bought by today’s seller in 2010.

Exterior

This Dino has had only one known repaint, therefore the exterior components remain in largely original condition. The Ferrari Rosso Rubino Metallizzato paint is especially striking. It is unknown at what point the car was repainted. The paint appears to be in good condition with one visible flaw on the rear deck lid, as seen in the photos. The plating appears to be good with no visible signs of pitting or other issues. The rubber in the bumper is in good condition and is not faded or checked. The wheels are in good condition with no visible issues. The glass, rubber gaskets and lights appear to be in excellent condition.

The black top appears in excellent condition with the gaps and fit, as original. It shows normal signs of use, much like the rest of the car.

Interior

The Nero Pello, black leather, Daytona style seats add to the salacious styling of the 246 GTS. The leather is in good condition with only minor wrinkles from years of use. It is obvious the leather has been extremely well maintained. The mouse hair on the dash has been replaced and appears as new. The shifter gate shows some minor wear scratches. The switches and other components show only minor wear if any. The steering wheel, door panels all appear in excellent condition. There is some fraying around the edges of the carpet around the pedals, but there are no other obvious issues.

Engine and Drivetrain

The engine bay is very clean. It appears to have mostly original finishes and has no signs of leaks or other issues. If showing in any type of Ferrari class or Concours it is advised to consult a Ferrari mark specialist for advice on any clamps or finishes in the engine bay that may need to be corrected. The car has recently had a full mechanical service. The radiator core was also replaced at this time.

There are no known issues with the engine and drivetrain and the current owner states that it is a very reliable driver.

Trunk and Storage Compartment

The trunk is in very good condition with the correct carpet and finishes. It does not appear to have been used much if at all. The underside of the deck lid and other paint finishes all appear as in original condition. The spare tire is in excellent condition, as are the fuse box lids and underside of the storage compartment. Please note that there is no toolkit included with the sale.

Underside

The underside shows normal signs of use. There is some surface rust on a few of the mechanical components, as well as road dirt. The exhaust system appears to be in good condition. There are no visible leaks or obvious issues on the underside.

Documentation

A Ferrari Certificate of Origin and copies of all the original import receipts is included with the sale.
