1976 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina

First introduced at the 1975 Paris Motor Show, the Ferrari 308 GTB styled by Pininfarina was the first Ferrari to be developed using Pininfarina’s own wind tunnel as well as the first production Ferrari to use fiberglass bodywork. Early 308 GTBs were constructed with a lightweight body made of fiberglass, in Italian vetroresina, and had a shorter wheelbase than its predecessor, the Dino 308 GT4. A change in manufacturing occurred in 1977, when Ferrari switched to steel body construction, leaving fewer than 800 vetroresina examples produced worldwide. US specification cars, of which this is one, only saw 100 examples built, making them the most desirable of the famed vetroresina 308 GTBs.

The 308 GTB shares its power plant and major mechanical systems with its predecessor the Dino 308 GT4. The transversely mounted, all aluminum V-8 mated to a five-speed manual transmission makes plenty of power to push this fiberglass Ferrari to a top speed of 140mph. The DOHC, 16 valve, 90 degree, 2.9L carbureted engine produces 240hp and 195lb-ft of torque. There are four twin-choke Weber carburetors to keep the eight cylinders supplied with fuel and a single coil ignition system to ignite it.

This particular Ferrari 308 GTB, chassis 19579, is being sold today in preservation form, having only seen 14,064 miles of road use. Imported by Chinetti-Garthwaite and sold to its first owners in 1977, this particular 308 vetroresina is finished in one of the most iconic colors a Ferrari can wear, Giallo Fly, over its original tan and black leather interior. Having been cared for by several long-term owners, chassis 19579 is being offered with Ferrari Classiche Certification, original owner’s manual and tools. This well-preserved, rare Ferrari will make a beautiful addition to any collection.

Exterior

This Ferrari is finished in its original ‘Fly Yellow’ as indicated by the paint code tag in the car. The major components such as bumpers and air vents are in good shape. While this vehicle does show some signs of age, it is evident that it is in excellent all original condition. There is some evidence of paint shrinkage and a few chips, but nothing that is not to be expected of a car of its age. The Original Campagnolo alloy wheels are free of major damage, although their paint shows some signs of use also. Overall the exterior is in excellent showable condition.

Interior

The interior of this 308 has aged impressively well over the last 44 years. The original beige and black leather throughout the car shows limited signs of age and retains good color without fading. The seat foundations are intact and wear on the covers is limited to natural creasing from use. The door panel coverings are wonderfully preserved, and the leather on the steering wheel and padded dash appears unblemished. The carpet set is undamaged, and the headliner is taut. The Instrumentation, including a 180mph speedometer, are all in excellent condition and function properly. The original Blaupunkt radio sits above the center fresh air vents and is also in fine condition.

Engine and Drivetrain

The engine compartment itself shows expected signs of use for its age with all finishes being correct and original stickers and badging in place. It is in excellent preserved condition, aligning with the displayed mileage.

Trunk and Storage Compartment

The luggage compartment in this 308 GTB is accessed through a zippered vinyl cover behind the engine. The carpet inside appears to be in like-new condition. All space in the front storage compartment is occupied by the vehicle’s radiator, spare tire, washer fluid, and brake reservoirs. The zippered vinyl cover in this front compartment is in near mint condition as well.

Underside

The underside of this Ferrari shows that it has been used. Other than some minor scuffs and dings on the belly pans, there are no other visible issues. There are no leaks visible from the engine or transmission, and all suspension components are preserved in operating condition with some still having original stickers.

Documentation and Spares

Included with the sale is the Ferrari Classiche Certification binder, as well as the correct Owner’s Manuals, pouch and original owner ID Data Form filled out in 1977. Also included is a tool roll, jack, work light and a spare bulb kit.
