1983 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser
With its legendary DNA rooted in a prototype intended for evaluation by Japan’s National Police Reserve during the early 1950s, Toyota’s FJ40 Land Cruiser continues to enjoy universal recognition for durability and the uncanny ability to traverse some of the world’s most rugged and demanding terrain. Importation of the short-wheelbase FJ40 to the United States commenced in 1960 and continued through 1983. While outwardly changed very little throughout its lengthy production run, the FJ40 nevertheless received many careful refinements throughout its lifespan, including the addition of a four-speed transmission in 1974 and a bump in engine displacement and power output to 4.2 liters and 135 horsepower respectively with the ‘2F’ engine specification by 1975. In addition to civilian use, these vehicles and their various sub-models inevitably saw military service in several countries and figured prominently in several Cold War hot spots. Through it all, the Land Cruiser remains every bit as dependable, durable, and capable as America’s world-famous “Jeep,” and arguably even more so. Of all Land Cruiser variants produced, the FJ40 remains the most recognized, imitated, and appreciated today, with these rugged workhorses inspiring the modern Toyota FJ and ranking highly among today’s most popular and enjoyable collector vehicles.
This 1983 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser is a nicely presented, driver-quality example overall that continues to benefit from a refresh completed prior to acquisition by the current owner in 2016. According to the prior owner, it was used earlier in its lifetime by a government branch; however, while this is certainly plausible, it is unconfirmed by documentation.
Exterior
Finished in Light Green with a contrasting White upper roof surface, this FJ40 features a highly desirable unmodified, factory-stock appearance unlike so many other examples still in existence today. Nonetheless, this FJ40 can certainly be used and enjoyed as originally intended and without worry. In addition to dual side view mirrors, a front towing hook, and rear-mounted spare wheel/tire, this FJ40 is adorned only by proper factory badges and emblems for a clean, factory-style presence. Factory-type painted steel wheels, mounting small bright hubcaps and aggressively treaded off-road radial tires, provide authentic finishing touches.
Interior
The interior compartment includes inviting, retrimmed seating surfaces of grained vinyl and newer rubber floor mats, retaining a well-maintained and factory-correct overall appearance. To the rear are a pair of useful fold-up, bench-type seats along each of the vehicle’s sides and double rear doors provide ease of cargo handling and entry/exit. The dash, instruments, steering wheel, and shift handles are complete, correct, and virtually new in appearance.
Engine and Drive Train
Numbered 2F702725, the proper Type 2F OHV inline 6-cylinder engine, factory-rated at 135 horsepower, is nicely presented with correct finishes and components in place. The engine bay is in similarly good, factory-appearing condition and includes a dual-circuit brake master cylinder with vacuum-type power assist. A 4-speed manual transmission and Toyota’s famed 4x4 drivetrain with locking hubs includes 2WD and 4WD and Hi-Lo speed ranges.
Undercarriage / Underside
The underside of the Land Cruiser appears complete and in correct factory specification. While not show-quality, the undercarriage and suspension appear well-maintained and consistent with the usable and enjoyable, yet high-quality condition of this on- and off-road capable FJ40.
