1999 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster

Internally designated ‘Project 132’, the long-awaited successor to the iconic Countach originated in 1985 during a particularly hectic time at Automobili Lamborghini, with engineering and design assigned to Luigi Marmirolli and Marcello Gandini – legends in their respective disciplines. The new model was deemed ready for production by May 1986; however, Chrysler finalized its buyout of Lamborghini in April 1987 and company chairman Lee Iacocca insisted on a direct review, with the original Italian design ultimately prevailing with further refinements. The stunning new Lamborghini debuted at the 1990 Chicago Auto Show and shocked all onlookers with its glorious excess everywhere it appeared. Provocatively named “Diablo” after a notorious fighting bull, the new Lamborghini, in the company’s words, “…could not be a conventional car, of course, and it had to be extreme, spectacular, forceful and uncommon,” a mandate handily exceeded. A truly important model, the Diablo revitalized Lamborghini and set the stage for the company’s resurgence and growth through the 1990s and beyond. The all-wheel drive Diablo VT, signifying Lamborghini’s Viscous Traction all-wheel drive system, maximized power delivery and traction.

Clearly well maintained and professionally serviced, this 1999 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster is accompanied by service records dating before and after the current owner purchased the vehicle in 2016, progressively tracking mileage and fully detailing service work performed from 2011 to the present. A Carfax vehicle-history report is also included, documenting three personal owners, clean history, and progressive mileage readings from new. Interestingly, this Diablo was sold on two separate occasions by a Lamborghini marque specialist, most recently to the current owner.

Exterior

Visually stunning with almost otherworldly styling and commanding presence, this 1999 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster is appropriately finished in Red Metallic paint over Cream leather upholstery. While the original paint finish and upholstery do show some aging consistent with a 20-year-old exotic car in the current owner’s demanding assessment of the Diablo, cosmetics remain very good and clearly reflect the attentive ownership and proper care it has received over the years. Glass, mirrors, emblems, and visor guards are all undamaged and consistent with a rare low-mileage exotic car. Huge Pirelli extreme-performance tires surround a set of nicely preserved OEM 5-slot alloy wheels by O-Z Racing. Visually, this Diablo is extremely attractive, correct, unmodified, and maintained in proper factory specification.

Interior

The Diablo’s snug cockpit is exceptionally luxurious yet equipped for spirited enjoyment with its driver-centric instrument layout and classically gated shifter operating the 5-speed rear transaxle. The Beige upholstery features discreet Red accents and remains attractive, indicative of proper care and adult use. The air conditioning system has been reviewed, repaired, and confirmed to work properly. An upgraded stereo head unit delivers additional entertainment. A back-up camera was added to the Diablo for enhanced rearward visibility; however, the current owner advises it is currently inoperative.

Engine and Drive Train

The Diablo’s mid-mounted 5.7-liter V-12 powerplant is visually impressive, well-maintained, and very nicely detailed in factory specification with proper components and detail items in place. Features of this engine, factory-rated at 492bhp and derived from Lamborghini’s prior Countach, include electronic port-type fuel injection, four valves per cylinder with dual overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, and  Lamborghini’s proprietary Valve Timing Management system. An upgraded exhaust system delivers a factory appearance with an even more aggressive exhaust note than stock. Power is sent to the ‘VT’ Viscous Traction all-wheel drive system via a competition-style rear transaxle including a 5-speed manual gearbox with an iconic gated shift quadrant. The engine is understood to be original to the Diablo and both it and the surrounding engine compartment are clean and correct in presentation. This particular example has the valuable hydraulic front lift system installed. The system was recently serviced and is fully functioning.

Trunk and Storage Compartment

Consistent with the rest of the car, the Diablo’s front storage compartment/trunk is clean, correctly presented and unmodified. Inside are found the spare tire, plus the factory-supplied roadside wheel tools and toolkits inside their respective and correct storage pouches. The vehicle’s owner’s manual and factory-supplied books are also stored here.

Documentation and Spares

In addition to a clean Carfax vehicle-history report, this 1999 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster is accompanied with a dossier of detailed service invoices covering the 2011-2020 timeframe. A beautiful and extremely valuable factory-issued, 3-piece leather fitted luggage ensemble is also included with the sale of the Diablo.
