The 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
The SLR was the product of the relationship between Daimler Benz and McLaren from their Formula One campaign collaboration of the era. Gordon Murray personally oversaw both the conception and the development of the SLR to produce a street legal drivers’ car with exceptional handling and speed, along with the kind of everyday usability and comfort expected of a Mercedes Benz product. The car’s mission statement was to be a true Grand Touring car with supercar ability while having none of the compromises that made them unpleasant. On these points Mercedes succeeded, creating a performance car in the SL tradition, but taken to an extreme.
This 2006 Mercedes-McLaren SLR wears a Crystal Digenit Blue exterior with anthracite and beige leather interior. This is one of 189 SLR’s delivered to the United States in 2006, and has fewer than 1,500 miles driven from new. This example was first owned by Keith Crain, the Chairman of Crain Communications, storing the car for most of its life with little use. When the second and current owner purchased this SLR in March of 2019, it had only 751 miles on the odometer.
Since March of 2019, this SLR has been regularly serviced by the consignor, with the most recent D Service being completed. As expected with a car of such few miles, it retains original paint throughout. The sale is accompanied by the original books, tools, window sticker, and service records. Currently installed on the car are a second set of OEM replacement wheels and tires but the original wheel and tire set that came delivered with the car are included in the sale.
Already a rare and interesting model, this SLR is made even more desirable by mileage so low it’s barely broken in, and its rare color combination. The story here, would actually be the lack of a story – this is a clean car with no issues, less than 1,500 miles, and a clean title, waiting for the next owner.
Exterior
The Crystal Digenit Blue paint is a rare color option, a very dark shade that changes with the angle of the light. From the outside the most striking aspect of this car’s design is the extra length from the leading edge of the door to the front wheels, highlighted by the side gills in that space. That was a direct result of Gordon’s Murray’s desire to keep the engine behind the front axle, described as a front-mid engine design. It has a profound effect on weight distribution, and gives the SLR its long wheelbase comfort and neutral balance. The active aerodynamics involves a rear spoiler that also acts as an air brake, tilting up to increase drag when brakes are applied, and a flat underbody and rear diffuser to manage airflow.
Interior
The interior, while completely stock, is finished in anthracite over beige leather. Along with the aluminum accents it makes for a very attractive interior, and presents with no scuffs, wear, or damage.
Drive Train
SLR’s were equipped with an upgraded version of the 5.4-liter supercharged V8 developed by Mercedes for their AMG models. The twin-screw Lysholm supercharger used 13.9 pounds of boost and produced 617HP and 575 ft/pounds of torque, a significant increase from the power level found in other Mercedes coupes and sedans of the era that used the base engine. The transmission utilized is the AMG Speedshift five speed transmission, chosen for its robust construction and ability to handle the engine’s prodigious output.
